Sceening of the movie "Fuocoammare" by Gianfranco Rosi
On 21 June, IOM co-hosted the Belgian premiere of the movie Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) at Ciné-ONU in Brussels. In this movie, director Gianfranco Rosi turns his attention to the Sicilian island of #Lampedusa and the effects of the ongoing #migrant crisis on its community. The movie won the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.
Shown from the perspective of the island's inhabitants, the film uses their lives as a narrative tool through which to explore this global crisis. The documentary contrasts the tough but essentially content settled conditions of the Lampedusans with the terrifying uncertainty experienced by the incomers.
During the introduction, Eugenio Ambrosi, Regional Director of IOM for the EU, Norway and Switzerland, insisted on the fact that Fuoccoammare is not only a film, but also a plea to avoid the trap of complacency.
