Annual Gathering with Embassies&Consulates
On 2 December, IOM and Fedasil have jointly organized the annual gathering with Embassies and Consulates at the Fedasil premises. The purpose of this gathering was to further enhance the existing collaboration with Embassies and Consulates within the frame of the Voluntary Return Programme from Belgium, supported by the Belgian Government since 1984 and currently managed by Fedasil.
It was a successful meeting with more than 37 participants and 28 countries represented.
The event started with opening speeches from Mr. Luxen (Fedasil Director General), Lies Verlinden (Cabinet of the state secretary for Asylum and Migration) and Ms. Palatini (Chief of mission, IOM Country Office for Belgium and Luxembourg).
Ms. Palatini started her speech by highlighting the historical agreement on 19 September bringing the leading global Migration Agency into the United Nations. Followed by an overview of the migration related trends this year, repeating IOM’s conviction that migration is inevitable, necessary and highly desirable if we have responsible and humane migration policies. One of those policies is the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme. Ms. Palatini stated that: “IOM truly believes that AVRR is a more sustainable and humane measure geared towards giving returnees a new start and contributing to origin countries’ economic stability and rehabilitation”. She ended by reiterating IOM’s full commitment to pursue the excellent collaboration with Embassies and Consulates.
After the speeches, the participants were invited to have a look at the IOM, Fedasil and Caritas stands where representatives of the respective organizations gave further information on ongoing activities and projects. The event ended with a walking cocktail.
